Job Description

Purpose:

The Personal Assistant Instructor (PAI) is expected to operate in the Member Education and Training Center (METC) as part of its Personal Assistant Training & Orientation Program. The PAI will also work closely with METC and the union to communicate with union members about union training programs and current issues.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The PAI’s primary responsibility is training Personal Assistants.  These are workers who work in the State’s Home Services Program to assist persons with a disability with their activities of daily living.  Instructors will deliver instruction using prepared training program curricula. In addition, the PAI may perform one or a combination of the duties and responsibilities listed below, depending on the particular assignment.

1. Set a professional, competent, efficient tone for the program

2. Model and maintain a positive atmosphere of respect and confidentiality

3. Teach classroom topics and actively participate in demonstrations and evaluation. Utilize Adult Learning popular education principles and techniques

4. Evaluate the progress of trainees

5. Meet with trainees individually about issues that arise in the classroom and to discuss their progress in the class or workshop.

6. Work closely with the Training Manager to update/revise current materials and lessons utilizing the mandated curriculum and other resources.

7. Assist with training new instructors on topics and techniques, as needed.

8. Ensure complete and accurate records of training participants.

9. Work together with other training staff to update and revise demos and handouts, recommend purchase of classroom supplies and commercial materials.

10. Participate in discussions on future program development.

11. Participate in staff development meetings and attend training/conferences to continually update adult-learner teaching skills and materials.

12. Participate in staff meetings and other meetings as needed.

13. Ensure flexibility of hours as needed to cover METC responsibilities.

14. Other duties as requested by the Training Manager/Executive Director.

Scope and Nature of Supervision:

The PAI’s primary responsibility is the education of Personal Assistants.  The PAI must be able to act and organize his/her time independently. S/he must also be able to receive direction from and interact with the Training Manager, as well as other union officers, staff, and leaders when it becomes necessary in the daily operation of the METC.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Two years prior instruction/training experience preferably with homecare or health care workers and/or in an adult education setting

2. Enthusiasm for and commitment to popular education techniques

3. BA desired

4. Bilingual - Spanish highly desirable

5. Demonstrated record of professional development through formal education, attendance at seminars, workshops, professional involvement and readings

6. Demonstrated respect for and ability to work in a diverse setting and with diverse populations (ethnic, language, racial, etc.).

 

Criteria for Evaluation:

The PAI will be evaluated on his/her ability and skills in training and assisting workers. The PAI will embrace the mission of SEIU HCII and the METC and demonstrate our organization’s values on a daily basis. Among other criteria, s/he will be evaluated on ability to work independently, maintain working relations with workers and staff, balance conflicting demands successfully, and carry out assigned tasks in a competent and professional manner in keeping with the METC’s overall goals and expectations. On a regular basis, staff will participate in formal feedback and evaluation.

Working Conditions:

The PAI must have the ability to work evenings and Saturdays and should have reliable transportation if they are not working in an urban area with a good mass transit system. 

Other Duties

All staff are expected to respect the processes of the organization and are expected to work within the framework of the organization to resolve internal disputes and issues.

Salary and Benefits:

PAIs will be paid $240 per training class and $160 per orientation session, no additional benefits provided.
