SEIU Healthcare Illinois & Indiana is a dynamic, action-oriented union of over 85,000 healthcare and childcare workers throughout Illinois and Indiana. As one of the largest and fastest growing affiliates of the Service Employees International Union, SEIU HCII is committed to building power for low and moderate-income families by organizing workers for economic and social justice. The METC exists to provide education and training for SEIU Healthcare members through skills training programs and classes that support worker empowerment and build a stronger union. METC events has run events with nearly 30,000 attendees.

Purpose:

The Personal Assistant Instructor (PAI) is expected to operate in the Member Education and Training Center (METC) as part of its Personal Assistant Training Program. The PAI will also work closely with METC, staff, and leaders to communicate with union members about union training programs and current issues.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The PAI’s primary responsibility is training workers and preparing to deliver the training program curricula. In addition, the PAI may perform one or a combination of the duties and responsibilities listed below, depending on the particular assignment.

  • Set a professional, competent, efficient tone for the program
  • Model and maintain a positive atmosphere of respect and confidentiality
  • Teach classroom topics and actively participate in demonstrations and evaluation. Utilize Adult Learning popular education principles and techniques.
  • Evaluate the progress of trainees
  • Assist with training new instructors on topics and techniques, as needed.
  • Ensure complete, accurate and timely records of training participants including class attendance.
  • When requested, work together with other training staff to update and revise demos and handouts, recommend purchase of classroom supplies and commercial materials.
  • Participate in discussions on future program development.
  • Participate in staff development meetings and attend training/conferences to update adult-learner teaching skills and materials.
  • Participate in staff meetings and other meetings as needed.
  • Rotate work hours as needed to cover METC responsibilities.
  • Travel to library, community buildings or other training locations across the State to deliver training. When possible, travel overnight to conduct training away from you home.
  • Other duties as requested by the Training Manager.

Location:  Western, Central and Southern Illinois.

Scope and Nature of Supervision:

PAI’s primary responsibility is the development and education of Personal Assistants. The PAI must be able to act and organize his/her time independently. S/he must also be able to receive direction from and interact with the Training Manager, as well as other union officers, staff, and leaders when it becomes necessary in the daily operation of the METC.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years prior instruction/training experience preferably with health care professionals/workers and/or in an adult education setting
  • Enthusiasm for and commitment to popular education techniques
  • BA desired
  • Bilingual English/Spanish highly desirable
  • Bilingual English/ Polish, Mandarin/Cantonese, Arabic is a plus
  • Demonstrated record of professional development through formal education, attendance at seminars, workshops, professional involvement and readings
  • Demonstrated respect for and ability to work in a diverse setting and with diverse populations (ethnic, language, racial, etc.).

Criteria for Evaluation:

The PAI will be evaluated on his/her ability and skills in training and assisting workers, delivering an enjoyable training experience and managing classroom attendance paperwork. The PAI will embrace the mission of SEIU HCII and the METC and demonstrate our organization’s values on a daily basis. Among other criteria, s/he will be evaluated on ability to work independently, maintain working relations with workers and staff, balance conflicting demands successfully, and carry out assigned tasks in a competent and professional manner in keeping with the METC’s overall goals and expectations. On a regular basis, staff will participate in formal feedback and evaluation.

Working Conditions:

The PAI will be asked to work a variety of times including some evenings, Saturdays and certain daytime hours. Hours and locations will be variable depending on class schedule.

Compensation:

PAIs will be paid $270 per class, for class instruction and preparation time, no additional benefits provided.
