Role Purpose:
The Controller position will report to the Director of Accounting and is accountable for the accounting operations of the union and METC, to include the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs a wide range of duties which may vary according to the program and campaign's needs, they include:
Management
- Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
- Manage outsourced functions.
- Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department's goals and objectives.
- Oversee the accounting operations of subsidiary corporations, especially their control systems, transaction-processing operations, and policies and procedures.
- Overseas day-to-day management of banking transactions
Transactions
- Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner.
- Ensure that accounts receivable are collected promptly.
- Ensure payroll in a timely manner.
- Ensure that periodic bank reconciliations are completed.
- Ensure that required debt payments are made on a timely basis.
- Maintain the chart of accounts, user permissions, and cost centers are updated.
- Maintain document retention systems in alignment with DOL compliance.
- Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions.
- Ensure proper cash management controls across all entities.
Reporting
- Issue timely and complete financial statements.
- Coordinate the preparation of governmental quarterly & annual filings.
- Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations.
- Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics.
- Manage the production of the annual budget and forecasts.
- Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management.
- Provide for a system of management cost reports and tracking of purchasing contracts.
- Provide financial analyses as needed, for cost containment and executive decision making.
Compliance
- Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit.
- Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
- Ensures appropriate levels of insurance coverage for all companies are kept current.
Supervision
- Supervises METC accounting staff.
Scope and Nature of Supervision:
The Controller must be able to organize their time and develop and carry out plans with minimum supervision. They must also be able to receive directions from and interact with managers and leaders at a high level.

SEIU HCIIMK managers are expected to lead by example. Must be able to work with racially and ethnically diverse workers in both cities and rural areas. They must respect and be willing to learn from and lead women, people of color, low-wage workers, and others. All staff are expected to respect the organization's processes and work within its framework to resolve internal disputes and issues.
Working Conditions:
May be required to work long and irregular hours, and to work on weekends and holidays when necessary.
Key Qualification Criteria:
- The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and qualities:
- Strong commitment to social justice

- Bachelor’s Degree (B.A. / B.S.) or equivalent.
- 5-7 years of experience in accounting and analysis experience.
- Proficient in QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions in entering data and preparing customized reports or other accounting software reporting.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and SharePoint
- Effective writing skills including the ability to synthesize information into clear, concise messages both for analytical reports and executive summaries.
- Effective verbal communication including the ability to relate well with others.
- Ability to work independently, think creatively, manage own time, and take initiative.
- Sound organizational skills to manage and prioritize work subject to deadlines in a dynamic and changing environment, as an individual and as a member of a team
- Strong writing and proofreading ability.
- Good and ethical judgment. Willingness to take initiative and to collaborate with a team.
Preferred Qualifications - Candidates with one or more of the following are preferred:
- Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus but not required.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary: $88,000 - $115,000/ Annually
