Location: Hybrid – Approximately 80% remote with 20% onsite requirements based out of Chicago, IL

 

Role Purpose

The Chief of Data Management and Analytics (CDMA) position will report to the Secretary Treasure and partner with Executive Leadership, Industry Division leadership and will spearhead the organization's efforts to develop a centralized data infrastructure, implement data governance policies, and drive the adoption of data analytics to inform decision-making and operational efficiency. This leader will oversee the Data Team as well as the strategic use of data across all levels of the organization, ensuring data integrity, security, and leveraging data analytics for strategic advantage.

 

The CDMA role is tailored to not only bring data management and analytics expertise to the organization but also to deeply understand and align with the specific needs and challenges of member-driven and particularly labor organizations. The ideal candidate will bring a combination of leadership, technical acumen, strategic vision, and experience within similar organizational contexts to leverage data for meaningful engagement and decision-making.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs a wide range of duties which may vary according to the need. Examples include:

 

Data Infrastructure Development - Lead the design and implementation of a robust, scalable data warehouse that integrates data from various sources within the organization, ensuring a single source of truth. Oversee the selection and implementation of data management and analytics tools and platforms that align with the organization's needs and strategic objectives.

 

Data Governance and Policy - Develop and implement comprehensive data governance policies to manage data access, quality, and compliance across the organization, ensuring adherence to legal and regulatory requirements. Establish and maintain data standards and practices that ensure data integrity and security, including protocols for data storage, backup, and disaster recovery.

 

Data Analytics and Decision Support - Drive the development and utilization of analytical models and reporting tools that provide actionable insights, supporting strategic decision-making across the organization. Promote a culture of data-driven decision-making, providing the leadership and teams with the training, tools, and support needed to leverage data analytics effectively.

 

Team Leadership and Management - Build and lead a team of data professionals responsible for data management, analysis, and reporting. Foster a collaborative environment that encourages innovation in data analytics and its applications to support the organization's goals.

 

Scope and Nature of Supervision:

In this senior leadership role, the candidate will oversee the Data Team and must be able to organize their time, develop and carry out plans with minimal supervision. They should have superior leadership abilities to mentor and develop their team members to reach their full potential. They must also be able to receive direction from and interact with their immediate supervisor and other union leadership.

The evaluation of the Chief of Data Management and Analytics (CDMA) focuses on their alignment with organizational goals, their ability to enhance decision-making, and the impact of their initiatives. Key assessment areas include the development and management of robust data infrastructure, the implementation of stringent data governance policies, and effective risk management. Leadership qualities are crucial, with a strong emphasis on the CDMA's ability to build and lead a team, foster data literacy across the organization, and drive innovation through the adoption of new technologies and continuous process optimization. Communication skills are also vital, particularly the ability to convey complex data insights clearly to non-technical stakeholders, ensuring that data-driven strategies are accessible and actionable.

Working Conditions:

May be required to work long and irregular hours, and to work on weekends and holidays when necessary. Travel may be required within our geographies and to campaigns or events as needed.

 

Key Qualification Criteria:

The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of experience in data management and analytics, with a strong preference for individuals who have worked within member-driven organizations. Experience within a labor organization is particularly valued, highlighting an understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities in managing and leveraging data in such contexts. They will also demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and qualities:

 

  • Successful candidate shall possess relevant education and/or experience in Computer Science, Information Management, Data Analytics, Data Management or a related field.
  • Good and ethical judgment. Willingness to take initiative, to work with and develop a cohesive team.

 

Data Management and Analytics Expertise:

  • Deep expertise in designing, implementing, and managing robust data infrastructures, including data warehouses and data lakes, with a focus on security, scalability, and accessibility.
  • Proficiency in data analytics and business intelligence tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau), including experience in creating compelling data visualizations and reports that cater to the needs of member-driven organizations.
  • Proficiency in SQL for querying databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Knowledge of data warehousing solutions like Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery, Snowflake, or Microsoft Azure SQL Data Warehouse.
  • Understanding of data warehouse design, implementation, and maintenance.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) for designing and delivering a variety of interactive and printed reports.
  • Ability to apply machine learning algorithms to enhance data-driven decision making
  • Skills in implementing data quality rules, policies, and procedures to ensure data integrity.
  • Expertise in using BI tools such as Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, or Looker for data visualization and reporting.
  • Familiarity with dashboard development, data visualization best practices, and interactive report creation.
  • Experience with ETL tools like Informatica, Talend, or Microsoft SSIS for data integration and transformation.
  • Skills in automating data flows and integrating data from various sources into a centralized repository.
  • Knowledge of data security tools to protect sensitive information and ensure compliance with data protection regulations.
  • Familiarity with tools for implementing security measures like encryption, data masking, and access control.

 

Leadership and Communication Skills:

  • Exceptional leadership abilities, capable of guiding and growing a data management team within the context of a member-driven or labor organization.
  • Strong communication skills, with the aptitude to articulate complex data concepts and insights to non-technical stakeholders, driving informed decision-making at all levels of the organization.
  • Strategic Thinking and Problem-Solving:
  • Strategic mindset with an emphasis on utilizing data to drive organizational goals, member engagement, and strategic initiatives within member-driven or labor environments.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills, with a demonstrated ability to address unique challenges faced by member-driven organizations through innovative data solutions.

Preferred Qualifications - Candidates with one or more of the following are preferred:

  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
  • Basic understanding of the principles of organizing.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of labor, political and community issues impacting working people.
  • Demonstrated ability in navigating the complexities of data management within organizations that are member-focused, including the integration of member databases, handling sensitive member information, and utilizing data to support member engagement and retention strategies.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing data strategies that align with the goals of member-driven or labor organizations, enhancing membership value through data-driven insights and analytics.
