The Helen Miller Member Education and Training Center (METC) is an educational organization providing instruction and training to workers represented by members of Service Employees International Union Healthcare Illinois/Indiana/Missouri/Kansas (SEIU HCIIMK). SEIU HCIIMK is a dynamic, action-oriented union of over 95,000 healthcare and childcare workers throughout those four states. Purpose:
METC is committed to ensuring access to training opportunities for Public and Private Homecare workers, Child Care Providers and other Healthcare Workers that are represented by our Local. The METC runs specific training programs that are governed by collectively bargained agreements and/or other contracts. The Training and Outreach Specialist (Specialist) will have primary responsibility for training content delivery and participant engagement, as well as assisting with organizing and coordinating educational, administrative, and operational activities to ensure a high quality METC Training Program that meets training goals and ensures good experience for attendees.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Specialist is responsible for class preparation and instruction based on the training program curricula. The Specialist will have outreach, enrollment and attendance responsibilities/goals, as well as perform any or a combination of the duties and responsibilities listed below, depending on the assignment.

  • Set a professional, competent, efficient tone for the classes.
  • Model and maintain a positive atmosphere of respect and confidentiality.
  • Manage each class to provide exceptional and equitable learning experiences.
  • Independently teach classroom topics and actively participate in demonstrations and evaluation. Utilize Adult Learning and Popular Education principles and techniques in a variety of settings across the State that are easily accessible to participants.
  • Travel to class venues within the State of IL or other areas. When needed, travel overnight to conduct training away from your home.
  • With the support of the local venue, ensure A/V systems are functioning correctly.
  • Facilitate various courses to participants online in a virtual classroom environment. Working closely with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and other software.
  • Maintain accurate paperwork, ensuring complete and accurate records of training participants including class attendance and work status.
  • Assist with training new field trainers on topics and techniques, as needed.
  • When requested, work together with other training staff to update and revise demos and handouts, curriculum and recommend purchase of classroom supplies and commercial materials.
  • Participate in staff development meetings and attend training/conferences to continually update adult-learner teaching skills and materials.
  • Rotate work hours (nights and weekends) to cover METC responsibilities.
  • Participate in staff meetings and other meetings as needed.
  • Provide recommendations for changes to curriculum or facilitation/teaching techniques.
  • Keep an accurate inventory of trainer supplies and request additional supplies as needed.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for day-of venue operations and classroom logistics for both in person and virtual training.
  • Continuously improving facilitation/teaching skills based on management feedback.
  • Conduct outreach and enrollment, including class reminders.
  • Generate and send CCOR/updates to program team, training manager and other METC staff.
  • Responsible for coordination and distribution of class materials and handouts.
  • Other duties as requested by METC program team and METC management.


Other Duties:
All staff are expected to respect the processes of the organization and are expected to work within the framework of the organization to resolve internal disputes and issues.

Scope and Nature of Supervision:
Specialist’s primary responsibility is the development and education of caregivers. The Specialist must be able to act and organize their time independently. They must also be able to receive directions from and interact with METC management and staff, as well as Union officers, and staff, when it becomes necessary in the daily operation of the METC.

Working Conditions:
Specialist must have the ability to travel throughout IL and other areas, work evenings and weekends. Job requires occasional minimal lifting of up to 50lbs of boxes and shipping packages.

Key Qualification Criteria:

  • Two (2) years prior instruction/training experience preferably with health care professionals/workers and/or in an adult education setting.
  • Enthusiasm for and commitment to popular education techniques.
  • Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree is desired.
  • Experience in the care provider field, such as in-home care, nursing home, adult foster home, long-term care facility, familial care, etc.; or a support person such as a case manager, social worker, or other related experience.
  • Formal or informal training experience, preferably with health care professionals/workers and/or in an adult education setting.
  • Enthusiasm for and commitment to popular education techniques.
  • Demonstrated record of professional development through formal education and attendance at seminars, workshops and professional involvement.
  • Demonstrated respect for and ability to work in a diverse setting and with diverse populations (ethnic, language, racial, etc.).
  • Clear understanding of Adult Learner and Popular Education principles.
  • The ability to work independently and remotely.
  • Private and professional location to conduct work while working remotely (home office or similar environment).
  • Ability to transport and lift, up to 30 lbs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • A commitment to treating coworkers and participants with respect.
  • Readiness to work long hours/weekends and engage in travel for professional development.
  • Valid driver’s license, good standing, and a reliable vehicle for travel.

Preferred Qualifications - Candidates with one or more of the following are preferred:
Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus but not required.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary: $59,882.00 – $63,476.00/ Annually
